Abstract The city of Amsterdam grew from a regional transit harbor to a maritime hub within a global shipping system, between 1580 and 1660. The traditional discussion on the origins of this layout concentrated on whether it represented a military design based on Renaissance principles or reflected an evolutionary process guided by practical demands. This paper discusses the maritime urban landscape of Amsterdam by introducing the presence of water and ships in the specific development of the harbor and its facilities, as a so-far neglected, but basically steering element of this urban process.
