Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to gain insight into the attitudes of people living in a rural area of South Africa towards persons with a disability and the extent to which these attitudes are related to people's characteristics. A total of 105 residents of a township in the Gauteng province were interviewed on a house-to-house basis. Both a Shortened Community Living Attitude Scale - Mental Retardation Form (S-CLAS-MR) and open questions were used to identify the attitudes towards disability and underlying thoughts about it. This study shows a significant relationship between the participant's age, education level, employment, and their attitudes towards persons with a disability.
