Abstract This chapter describes different types of rating scales, rubrics, and scoring approaches (e.g., holistic vs analytic, primary trait scoring, task-dependent vs task-independent, intuitive vs empirically-based, norm-referenced vs criterion-referenced) that have been used in SLA for assessing L2 speaking and writing. On the basis of two empirical studies conducted within the framework of task-based language teaching and assessment, the use of rating scales and scale descriptors in practice are discussed. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for language pedagogy and assessment.
