Abstract
In the international literature, the Netherlands are seen as a role model when it comes to the organization of sexuality education in schools. The aim of this study was to explore the content and the approach of sexuality education within secondary schools, the practical experiences of teachers with the discussion of the theme, and the competences they need for that. Through interviews with 23 teachers of different schools, the researchers have tried to sketch how these teachers approach sexuality education; which topics they teach, and which topics they find difficult to discuss; which differences they observe between pupils concerning their cultural background, education level, age, and gender; and which competences they consider important for teaching sexuality education. The results indicate that concerning the approach and the quality of sexuality education within secondary schools -even in the Netherlands- there is room for improvement.
