Abstract

Mindful parenting can be characterized as the intentional practice of being fully present in the here-and-now, free from judgement, while engaging in the act of parenting. The mindful parenting programme equips parents with the ability to recognize their parenting stress and adopt a non-reactive parenting style. Through this heightened awareness, parents develop the capacity to create space and cultivate compassion for both themselves and their children during challenging moments. This programme further enables parents to adopt a more flexible and adaptive coping with parenting stress. Research findings indicate that the mindful parenting programme enhances parent-child relationships, promotes the well-being of both parents and children, and mitigates psychopathology in both parties. It is suggested that when parents experience reduced stress, their children likewise experience a decrease in stress levels, prompting a positive impact on the parent-child relationship and overall family functioning. Mindful parenting training can offer parents’ moments of tranquillity, silence, and reflection amid their hectic work and family lives. In addition to research evidence from the West, this book chapter presents preliminary empirical findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of mindful parenting in Hong Kong, China. It also illustrates the benefits of practising mindful parenting through a Chinese parent’s experience with the programme.
