Abstract This introduction presents the concept of ‘biography’ or ‘life stages’ of medicines as an ordering principle and analytical tool for the study of medicines as social, commercial and symbolic objects. The first stages, production and marketing, which have been largely neglected by social scientists, receive special attention. Finally, the five contributions to this special half-issue are summarized and placed in the life stages conceptual framework.
